Intrigued by her, I took a look at her YouTube channel (LaurenAquilinaMusic), and found that she started as many recently have- uploading videos of herself singing on the Internet in the hopes of grabbing someone's attention. In the videos she sits in her bedroom at a keyboard, playing as she sings covers or original songs. Her only pieces of equipment are headphones and a simple standing microphone, yet her voice sounds impeccable. After she sings her songs, she has short commentaries to conclude the videos and talks about what's going on with her and what is to come. She comes across as a very down-to-earth, friendly girl with an awe and passion for what she does, and I think that's definitely another contributing factor to her appeal.
Throughout her debut EP "Fools", she keeps her sound consistent, yet somehow manages to not make it repetitive, which is something that a lot of new artists struggle with. Her songs are also surprisingly uplifting, despite the fact that many of the lyrics may tug at your heart strings. Yes, she does have a good amount of love songs, but they are not at all cliché and don't make me cringe like some other ones do. One of my favorite things about her songs is that she doesn't shy away from cussing. Now, I'm not saying that she's cursing left and right, but sometimes feelings can be better expressed with certain "choice" words, and Lauren takes full advantage of that. Her voice is fantastic; she has the clarity and English edge of Ellie Goulding, which I've always found really refreshing because of its slightly ethereal qualities. My personal favorite song of hers thus far would have to be "Fools". If Daughter and Ellie Goulding collaborated on a song, "Fools" is how I would imagine the product to be. It's soft and sweet, but the amazing lyrics and Lauren's strong voice make it unforgettable.
I truly believe that Miss Aquilina is going to go far in the music business. She's likeable, relatable, young, talented... characteristics which really make a star these days. I'm happy to say that she has gained a fan here, and I will definitely be keeping my eye out for new releases by her from now on. I wholeheartedly suggest that you all check her out, because I'm sure that you'll be just as pleasantly surprised as I was!
